Dp-Ruto’s office among most corrupt – pollster

The Office of the Deputy President is among the most corrupt government institutions in the country, latest survey by research firm Infotrak has revealed.

The survey released on Tuesday placed the Office of the Deputy President at 51% corruption prevalent level followed by the Office of the President at 46.4%.

The research further shows that 62% of Kenyans feel that the country is heading in the wrong political direction while 55% feel Kenya is heading on the wrong direction, economically.

Raila reveals CORD is ready to do anything to bring down JUBILEE in 2017

“If my candidature proves to be an impediment in our determined resolve to rescue the country from the grips of Jubilee, and if supporting another person would help, I would be more than willing to step down for them,” Raila said, as quoted by a local newspaper.

My question is, could this be the right time for Hon. Musalia Mudavadi to come back home and lead the team? Was Hon.  Ababu Namwamba, so fast to leave CORD because here is an opportunity that needed a profound person like him? Maybe yes or no, depending on the reasons that can be tabled. Can CORD really bring down Jubilee?

If Raila steps down, this could mark one of the wisest decisions ever made in the political history. Moreover, Raila has not been so strict that the leadership of Cord is restricted to the three of them that is, Hon. Wetangula, Raila and Kalonzo but has hinted that there is a possibility of considering an outsider, Hon. Mudavadi you are the outsider who can lead CORD.

Social media users have been thrown into a frenzy after photos of underpants christened “Joho Tena 2017” emerged online.

Speculations abound that the orange in colour garments are part of Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho's campaign, to retain his seat in 2017 elections.

A section of the public hailed the move as a good campaign strategy while others felt it was an insignificant step. 

Efforts by Kenyans.co.ke to confirm whether the boxers are part of his campaign material were unsuccessful as the governor's phone was switched off.

Olympic gold medallist robbed at gunpoint in Rio

Olympic gold medallist Ryan Lochte says a gun was put to his head during a robbery in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday.

Lochte, who won gold in the men’s 4×200 metre freestyle relay on Tuesday, was one of four American swimmers stopped by armed men after attending a party they were invited to by Brazilian swimmer Thiago Pereira.

“We got pulled over, in the taxi, and these guys came out with a badge, a police badge, no lights, no nothing, just a police badge and they pulled us over,” Lochte was quoted as saying by NBC.

''They pulled out their guns, they told the other swimmers to get down the ground. I refused, I was like, ‘we didn’t do anything wrong, so I’m not getting down on the ground’.

“And then the guy pulled out his gun, he cocked it, put it to my forehead and he said, ‘get down’. And I put my hands up, I was like ‘whatever’. He took our money, he took my wallet. He left my cell phone, he left my credentials.”

The International Olympic Committee initially denied the robbery took place, despite Lochte’s mother claiming she had been in contact with her son after the incident.

However, the United States Olympic Committee (OSOC) has since confirmed three other team members, along were Lochte, were involved in the incident.

“According to four members of the U.S. Olympic Swimming Team (Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger, Jimmy Feigen and Ryan Lochte), they left France House early Sunday morning in a taxi headed for the Olympic Village,” the USOC said in a statement.

“Their taxi was stopped by individuals posing as armed police offers who demanded the athletes’ money and other personal belongings. All four athletes are safe and cooperating with authorities.”

After a series of missteps for a firm foothold in politics, former Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi is gradually shedding the image of a gentleman of politics and increasingly becoming more combative and assertive. 

The transition comes as a major surprise to friend and foe. The latest in this transformation curve is this week’s statement in which Mudavadi took a swipe at President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto, whom he cast as tricksters out to return the country to one-party rule. He was angry that Jubilee leaders are arm-twisting the coalition’s affiliates to dissolve into the Jubilee Party. Prior to that, the former vice president and Sabatia MP had declined an invitation to team up with Uhuru and Ruto, describing them as ‘conmen’ incapable of delivering on their promises to the electorate.

In 2002, he also rejected nomination by Kanu when he was voted out of Parliament for refusing to heed calls to be the opposition’s “compromise” candidate and instead opted to be Uhuru’s running mate. Uhuru lost to Mwai Kibaki resoundingly. It was a setback for Mudavadi, who for more than two years thereafter avoided public life. He resuscitated his political career during the 2005 constitutional referendum, when he teamed up with opposition leader Raila Odinga to defeat the government side. 

Mudavadi’s grouse with Jubilee goes back to the 2013 elections. Uhuru and Ruto made a covenant with the Amani leader in which they were to support him because they faced crimes against humanity charges at the International Criminal Court. Hours after the deal was sealed, the two went back on their word. They repeatedly cast Mudavadi as too laid-back and lacking ambition. While Uhuru has since toned down, Ruto uses every opportunity available to project Mudavadi as a coward and incapable of leadership. 

The bad blood between Mudavadi and Ruto goes back to 2007, when Orange Democratic Movement stalwart Raila Odinga preferred him to Ruto as running mate against President Kibaki. This is because Mudavadi cuts the profile of trustworthiness and hails from a community that shares similar economic and political setbacks with Raila’s Nyanza stronghold. In contrast, Ruto is scandal-ridden, despite the energy and gusto he brings to any political contest. 

The gulf between Ruto and Mudavadi widened further when Raila appointed the latter a deputy prime minister, allegedly reneging on a pact among members of the Pentagon (the then ODM decision-making organ) that had reserved the premier’s position for Ruto.

ODM has strongly opposed the idea of President Uhuru Kenyatta holding a televised press conference on Jubilee party matters at State House,

Party secretaty Opiyo Wandayi said Uhuru should move the event to Jubilee's headquarters or elsewhere for the sake of national interest.

The Presidential Service Communication Unit had earlier sent a media alert on Monday that the President will make a televised announcement on Jubilee Party matters at State House, Nairobi on Tuesday.

Wandayi said such actions amount to abuse of office and said ODM shall not hesitate to invoke requisite actions as provided in the constitution.

"It must be clearly understood that the President resides in and operates from State House in his capacity as Head of State. For that matter, only those matters concerning the State should be conducted from State House," Wandayi said.

"Jubilee Party matters certainly do not concern the State and as such can not, and should not, be conducted from State House," he added.

The Ugunja MP said: "Jubilee is not equivalent to the Kenyan State and neither is the Kenyan State, Jubilee. This distinction must be made clear and the Jubilee leadership must be compelled to understand it."

Latest poll NAIROBI IS A TWO-HORSE RACE

The Nairobi gubernatorial race will be a two horse race between Governor Evans Kidero and Senator Mike Sonko, a poll released on Monday showed.

According to the poll, incumbent Governor Evans Kidero is ahead of the race at 36 percentage points, followed closely by his arch-rival Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko at 30 per cent.

Other aspirants namely Johnson Sakaja, Dennis Waweru and Bishop Margaret Wanjiru each got 3 percentage points in the poll.

ENDORSEMENTS

Water Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa, who was recently endorsed by a section of Jubilee legislators, was last with 1 per cent support from the respondents.

The poll was conducted by Trends & Insights For Africa (TIFA) Research Limited between July 28-31, 2016.

According to the poll, Senator Sonko drew his support mostly from male voters, while Governor Kidero enjoyed the support of female voters.

In the senatorial race, incumbent Mike Sonko led at 39 percentage points, with 31 per cent of the respondents still undecided.

Nine per cent of the respondents were in support of nominated Senator Elizabeth Ongoro, 8 per cent in support of nominated Senator Beth Mugo, while 19 per cent said they would vote other candidates.
